I Guess We'll Take Him

Good Morning Bloggers! I would like to share my reaction to the Arlen Specter news yesterday. Let's just say that I'm both happy and sad.

I know I should be very happy, but to be honest my reaction is tainted by my slight bitter belief that we need to move away from the old guard and move toward a new type of politician - a less bought-and-paid-for kind. That said, I do believe Arlen Specter is a man of honesty and integrity, but he's still very much a product of today's broken system.

For me, he'll have to be more progressive on all the new Obama initiatives before I feel comfortable selling his seat out from under a perfectly good, new Democratic talent.

I'll admit, his record on Project Vote Smart shows that he's a very well-rounded, moderate Senator. His voting record paints a picture of a conservative Democrat, one who has helped the middle-class by and large. No matter, I still have reservations. I especially dislike his positions on preemptive war and employee choice, or what the "pro-business GOP" likes to call "card check." They both suck!

Anyway, I guess we're stuck with him since Harry "the wimp" Reid and President Obama obviously struck a deal. I hope they know something we don't, such as a quiet, verbal commitment by him to vote WITH THE DEMOCRATS to end GOP debates. As Martha Stewart likes to say, that would be a good thing.

Overall it's accurate to say the Senior Senator from Pennsylvania is not overly conservative. His conservative special interest ratings are low. The John Birch Society rated him a low 28% in 2008, The Christian Coalition 30%, GOP USA 16%, The Club for Growth 13%, The American Conservative Union gave him a generous 48%, and The Americans for Prosperity 0%. Wow, don't conservatives name their organizations well? The names have nothing to do with their psycho agendas, but they are cool. What a bunch of lying assholes!

So, I guess he's not as bad as some. Despite that fact, I still have a lingering feeling that we may have been better off with a younger, more dynamic Democrat. Age and wisdom are important, but not if they're going to mean another decade or two of old-fashioned, slow, antiquated politics. Like so many of you, I voted for CHANGE in 2008, and I want as much of it as we can get.

Wednesday's Political Rave - Michael

PS - I just learned that Specter took a lot of money from the AFL-CIO recently and turned around and told them he changed his mind and wouldn't support the Employee Free Choice Act. If that's true, it's one more example of why we need to get rid of people like Specter. Based on that and other information about Specter's supposed "independence," I hope the people of Pennsylvania support another Democratic candidate.

PSS - On another subject, I think we should complain to the FCC about the FOX Network's refusal to air the President's news conference. There are few national broadcast networks, and they should all cover the President during times of crisis. FOX denies us news at a time of war, pandemic flu, and economic collapse. It just goes to show you that Rupert Murdoch is the WORST import since our last major pandemic. The man is SCUM!

Specter is preferable to Ben Nelson, or Blanche Lincoln, or even DINO Feinstein. I wish we could have arranged a trade for one of them.

I agree JR - a "prisoner trade" of sorts - the trouble is they don't have any we really want. :)

Specter is nothing more than a good example of what an old has been will do to save their political career.

It is also good example of one person more interested in retaining what little power they may have as opposed to representing the people who elected them, good riddance to a piece of political shit.

Do you think a politician that hasn't been bought and paid for actually exists?

Richard Shelby is a piece of shit also both he and Spector are to Washington DC as to what a Raccoon is to a trash bin.

"What a racoon is to a trash bin" was very funny Anon. You're still rude and crude, but at least you were funny that time. :) MB

PS - There are "racoons" in both parties. About a dozen or so Democratic "racoons" voted against saving people's homes late last week, along with ALL the Republicans. I hope their constituents realize how little they do to help them.

Michael - It does seem the old guard has left the country in shambles. Hopefully fresh, younger, perhaps more progressive faces will emerge to replace the tired, old authoritarian types.

Nancy that is the most intelligent thing you have said, yes there are to many old farts sitting on Capitol Hill we need to start with the Nancy Pelosi’s and Harry Reid’s and go right down the line and clean house.

It comes a time when these people forget why they were elected and the only thing they worry about is their selves and no one else, term limits of 8 years and no more should be in place that would keep most of them honest.

Boh in today's world and dealing with you liberals you have to be rude and crude and down right nasty, like the majority of your party.

Well, thank you Person with No Name. I'm happy you agree with my statement, "perhaps more progressive faces will emerge to replace the tired, old authoritarian types." In case you need clarification, the word 'progressive' means liberal. The word 'authoritarian' is always synonymous with conservatives.

I do agree, however with your term limits statement.

"The word 'authoritarian' is always synonymous with conservatives."

Nancy that is what you and your kind like to make people believe, all you have to do is look at the Nazi regime that we have in place today to prove your statement as nothing more than a cover-up.

Oh Dear, Mr. Anon. I have never tried to "make others" believe anything. That's what authoritarians do. People are perfectly capable of making up their own minds about what they observe unless they're under the mistaken belief that authoritarians know best.

As for your comment about the "Nazi regime we have in place today," well, that's just laughable. I'm sorry you're so misinformed.

Nancy when you use the term progressive, why not tell the people you are about as goofy if not as goofy as the far right.

I do not know who is the worse of the bunch the progressives or the right wingers both are fucking whack jobs.

Buffalo - Believe it or not I do think they exist, but they're rare. They come in varying degrees I think, but Specter is one of the old guard that doesn't have the best track record. I would prefer new blood. Nancy, I hope you understand if I stay out of the Anon-BS this time. I'm just not in the mood. He/she can be exhausting. Stupidity is often exhausting. :) MB

Hey Michael, no problem at all. I had already decided to not respond at all. Just not worth the effort. BTW, there's a really good article at SFGate regarding anonymous commenters to blogs and news sites that have destroyed meaningful conversations. ( http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article/article?f=/g/a/2009/02/13/notes021309.DTL ) One of these days, news sites may require commentors to use their real names and images which may cause a person to think twice before they anonymously attack another person. Personally, I'm all for it. Have a great evening, Michael. :)

Thanks for the link to the article Nancy. It's true blog "distractors" refuse to debate based on facts or good faith. As I've often said, Anon and his kind have never debated me point-for-point. They always use broad strokes and unsourced data, while relying on rude verbal gestures to cloud the subject and get the attention they seek. In the same way Obama wins debates, we Democrats can win any debate POINT-FOR-POINT if given the chance. The Anons of this world know it, which is why they are blog "distractors" and not blog contributors. Like you, I look for contributors. Have a great day Nancy - Michael
