Hello Bloggers - I don't know if you guys noticed but there's a really cool "widget" on our blog here called "Today's Newspapers" sponsored by the NewspaperIndex.com. It features pictures of the front pages of newspapers from around the world, which are compiled by the journalism museum in Washington, DC - the Newseum is one of my favorite places on earth.I mention this widget because I want to start a new feature where I click on a random paper every now and then to talk about a great local story effecting everyday people. The story will be even more interesting if we can all get involved and to help.
Today I clicked on the Deluth News Tribune from Deluth, Minnesota, and it featured a cover story on an American soldier who is pleading to bring a pup named "Rachet" home from Iraq. Incredibly, more than 10,000 people - and me - have signed an online petition urging the Army to let an Iraqi puppy go home with the Minnesota soldier, who fears that Ratchet could be killed if left behind.
Army Sgt. Gwen Beberg of Minneapolis rescued Rachet as a puppy from a burning trash pile in Iraq, but Defense Department rules prohibit soldiers in the U.S. Central Command from adopting pets. Now, let's take action! Help her by joining thousands of others and SIGN THE PETITION urging the Army to let her bring Rachet home. Click here to sign.
“I just want my puppy home,” Sgt. Gwen Beberg of Minneapolis wrote to her mother in an e-mail Sunday from Iraq, soon after she was separated from the dog following a transfer. “I miss my dog horribly.” Beberg, 28, is scheduled to return to the U.S. next month. GOOD NEWS!!!! It's October 20th and I just received news that animal rights rescuers successfully flew Rachet out of Iraq, into Kuwait, and now into Dulles Airport, Washington, DC. It looks like our CALL TO ACTION was successful. Like my mother always said, every little bit helps. I hope you and Rachet have a great time together Gwen. Good luck to you both - Michael
